E-seminar to farmers, Geraki, Greece, 24 January 2008

A successful learning course, through the Rural Wings Satellite Platform, was held on 24 of January 2008 between the remote pilot site Geraki and the Agricultural University of Athens.

Geraki is a remote village in the island of Crete, Greece, and is the first pilot site in Rural Wings that is connected with the “productive” local economy. Through the HellasSat satellite platform of Rural Wings a connection was established between the satellite terminal in the Geraki Rural Wings pilot site and the Agricultural University of Athens (the capital of Greece). By this way a remote learning course took place in order to inform the local sheep and goat farmers in Geraki regarding animal hygiene through the Agrotelediagnosis e-tool developed in the framework of Rural Wings by Forthnet S.A.
The remote E-seminar was conducted by Prof. Xylouri and other experts from the Agricultural Univeristy of Athens to about 30 farmers in Geraki involved in animal husbandry. The E-seminar was held for about 4 hours. There was very intense discussion, many questions and a lot of interest about the subject of Animal Hygiene, Biosecurity and the most frequent infectious diseases. The e-seminar to sheep and goat farmers was related to “Hygiene on farm level”. Biosecurity and prevention on farm leve l were emphasised. The future key - words for farmers and consumers shall be traceability and food safety measures. So, farmers were introduced to the details regarding these issues. In particular, apart from the general overview of the subject, the most frequent infectious diseases were analysed and their prevention was presented.
The personal experience of the contributors in field studies was analysed. The scientific team answered to the arisen questions of the farmers on practical level and they arrived on concrete ideas.
As the discussion was over, a near future appointment in about two weeks time with the same place and facilities was determined to discuss the new questions which were arisen.
